Chapter Twelve

After sunset, the activities focused on eating and drinking, and music and more eating. Then someone suggested doing shots.

As much as she loved her project, she didn’t want to think about it this week. What difference would a week off make? She had the final calculations ready to install, and all she had to do was put it into its testing phase.

Sage started by doing the first few, before Ryan tried to talk her out of getting carried away.

“I’m doing spring break like every other college student does spring break.”

The first shot had gone down hard. Little by little, her responsibilities disappeared. With each tequila shot, the project became less and less important. It was almost finished anyway, and after about two shots, the effects of the first few loosened her right up.

Amy suggested switching to sex-on-the-beach.

“Sounds intriguing,” Sage leaned over and whispered in Ryan’s ear.

“It is but it can be addictive,” he replied.

“The drink or the action?” Sage really wanted to know.

“Both,” he inched her closer.

“I can see what you mean.” Sage sniffed the glass and giggled, relaxed and happy. The alcohol tasted like dessert and went down way too easily. “Hey, I don’t think there’s any alcohol in those shots.”

Ryan shifted her into his lap and took her head in his hands. When he kissed her, the world tilted and her body sort of melted like a candle.

“You just rocked my world, literally.”

“I think the shots did that.”

A few minutes and zero inhibitions later, somebody challenged her to tequila shots, but before Sage agreed, Ryan distracted her.

“Stay with me, Sage. Try this.” He handed her a bottle of water. “I want you conscious for what I have planned tonight, babe.”

What he had planned? His words sent tickling fingers of delight to every nerve in her body. His take-charge attitude didn’t irritate her the way it had with the other guys. Ryan made her feel feminine and powerful—comfortable and uncomfortable at the same time.

A few heart-stopping kisses later, with her need ratcheted up to where’s-the-private-room, she risked asking, “What did you have in mind?”

“Something that’s illegal in a few states. You game?”

Oh, man am I. “You may have to teach me a thing or two.”

“We have time, and as long as we know where this is going, we can anticipate the fun.”

She would enjoy him while she could. All of her plans for spring break…fell into place.

Except for the tiki torches, and the moon rising, the beach was covered in shadows. The party hadn’t died down at all. The band played on, and people danced. Couples paired off drifting into dark private corners.

Ryan asked, “You feel like taking a walk? There’s plenty of light along the shore.”

She held out her hand. “I love the way the moon reflects off the break-water.”

They walked in the shallow water. As they walked, the water crept higher. The tide rolled in, and she waded in deeper.

“The water temperature seems warmer now than it did earlier.” Maybe it was because the air was cooler or being in the water with Ryan’s arm around her shoulder heated her up.
